The Kerry Blue Terrier is a medium sized (30-40 lbs) dog that originated in Ireland. They are also known as the Irish Blue Terrier. The breed was used in both Ireland and England for hunting small game and fowl as well as retrieving.  The first Kerries were brought to North America in 1918 and began appearing in shows soon after.

The Kerry Blue in the photo above is a beautiful example of the breed!

Kerry Blue Terriers are a generally healthy breed and can live up to 15 years, however there are some genetic conditions that you should be aware of if you are considering bringing one of these dogs into your family.  Kerries can suffer from keratoconjunctivitis sicca (dry eye), cataracts and entripion.  Hip Dysplaysia, hypothyroidism and Progressive neuronal abiotrophy (PNA) have also been seen.  Make sure you locate a reputable breeder and ask many questions about the health of the dogs within their lines.
