The Icelandic Sheepdog is a medium (20-30 lbs) sized herding breed and is the only dog that is native to Iceland.  It is believed that descendants of this breed were brought to Iceland with Viking settlers in approximately 874 – 930 AD.  These dogs are also known as the Iceland Spitz, the Iceland Dog, the Friaar Dog and the Íslenskur Fjárhundur.  It also has the nickname “the dog of the Vikings”.  It is believed to be one of the most primitive of all of the dog breeds.

The Icelandic Sheepdog coat is thick and waterproof and comes in a variety of colors including tan, reddish-brown, chocolate, grey, and black.  Prominent white markings are required with all color types.  The coat comes in 2 lengths – long and short.  They are normal shedders and should be brushed regularly. The 2 Icelandic Sheepdog pups in the photo above are adorable examples of the breed!
