The Coton de Tulear (pronounced “KO-Tone Dih TOO-Lay-ARE”) is a small breed (7-13 lb) of dog that originated in Madagascar (a large island off the coast of Africa).  It is believed that the small Bichon type dog’s ancestors ended up on the island in the 15th century due to a shipwreck.  It wasn’t until 1971 when these dogs were brought from Madagascar to France that the breed was formally established.  The Coton is Madagascar’s National breed of dog.

The Coton de Tulear has hair, not fur and is considered a low-shedding breed.  This breed is a good choice for individuals who suffer from allergies.  In order to keep a Coton well-groomed, they should be brushed 3-4 times a week to prevent mats and tangles and be introduced to a bathing routine at a young age.  As you can see in the photo above, a clean Coton does indeed resemble a cotton ball!
