Is CBD Oil Good For My Dog?

October 2nd, 2018 by Dan

CBD oil seems to be one of the hottest trends on the market today. From bubble bath to desserts, people are consuming CBD in a huge variety of ways for countless reasons. In this popularity boom, you might have heard that CBD could be useful for your dog too. If you’re like many people, you might not even be sure what exactly CBD oil is, much less know if its safe and beneficial to your dog. Read on while we break it down for you:

What is CBD Oil Anyway?:

CBD is a phytocannabinoid that’s derived from two varieties of the cannabis sativa plant: hemp and marijuana. The primary difference between the two is that CBD oil that comes from hemp is from the stalks and bark of the plant and contains only traces of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) – less than .3 percent – the chemical that causes a “high” feeling or mind-altering effects. CBD oil made from hemp is legal in ALL of the United States and can be shipped across the country. (However, CBD oil derived from marijuana is only legal in specific states.) Studies so far have shown that CBD may be beneficial in reducing chronic pain and inflammation by impacting endocannabinoid receptor activity and interacting with neurotransmitters.

How Can CBD Oil Help My Dog?

If your dog suffers from any of the following conditions, using products that contain CBD may be an effective method to give them some relief:

Seizures
Arthritis
Anxiety
Cancer Symptoms
Nausea

There is a lack of veterinary research about CBD, but if you’re interested in using a product for your dog, you should speak to your vet first. Veterinary medicine is working hard to catch up with the use of CBD in companion animals with medical issues, but it will take some time for the scientific research to be there to back up the claims. A new study recently completed at Cornell suggests that 2 mg/kg of (CBD) oil twice daily can help increase comfort and activity in dogs with osteoarthritis. The abstract was submitted to the 2017 American College of Veterinary Surgeons Summit in Indianapolis and is pending peer review. Dogs either received the CBD or a placebo for 4 weeks in a double-blind study. After the study was over, owners completed a questionnaire to address pain, lameness and the response to treatment. The results support the benefits of the use of CBD in dogs for pain relief in this type of situation.

It’s vital to document any products you do use for your pets and understand that you are using *alternative* treatments and to keep in mind that CBD is just one method of treating a condition. While this alternative continues to grow in popularity, pet owners can sometimes have unrealistic expectations of the results or expect it to be a “cure-all.” Remember to be patient and start slowly with any new supplement you give to your pet.
