Meet the New Westminster Breeds for 2011: The Leonberger

February 13th, 2011 by Dan

The Leonberger is a large, intelligent member of the Working Group that originated in Germany in the mid nineteenth century. The breed served many purposes from guarding, to drafting and as an all around farm dog.

The males have a distinct lion-esque mane and please keep in mind if you’re considering one of these great dogs – they do shed! While this breed may look rugged, they are very sensitive and must be an indoor dog that is a part of your family. They have a great deal of energy and enjoy having a job to do. Most Leos do well with children and other animals, but puppies can be large and unaware of their big bodies so watch them around small kids! (Adult dogs can range from 25.5 -29.5 inches tall according to breed standard).
