Meet the New Westminster Breeds for 2011: The Icelandic Sheepdog

February 13th, 2011 by Dan

The Icelandic Sheepdog is a spitz-type dog that joins the other members of the Herding Group. This hearty Nordic canine arrived on longboats with the first Viking settlers (AD 874 – 930) and now makes it’s way into the show rings of Westminster!

The breed is the only native dog of Iceland and was used for herding and driving livestock. While the breed is always alert, they are not aggressive and will always greet strangers happily. They are known for their cheerful demeanor and playful personality. They are known to be “shadow” dogs, following their owners wherever they go. Once again, this rugged looking breed must be an *indoor* companion!

This medium sized dog (16.5-18 inches according to breed standard) has a thick, weatherproof coat that comes in two styles – long and short. The Icelandic Sheepdog has the distinctly curled Spitz tail.

Keep a lookout for the Icelandic’s big premier at Westminster this week!
