Dog News: Oh My Dog! Ridgeback Mix Receives Communion

July 28th, 2010 by Dan

An Anglican priest in Toronto has come under fire after she handed a 4-year-old German Shepherd/Rhodesian Ridgeback mix named Trapper, a communion wafer during services.

Trapper’s owner, Donald Keith, is a truck driver – he took the dog to St. Peter’s Anglican Church after hearing that it was pet friendly. When Keith went up to receive communion, his dog followed and the Reverend Marguerite Rea provided both of them with a wafer. The dog had no wine.

Rea later apologized to the congregation, as she was slammed with criticism for her actions. At least one congregant supported her in a letter to the Toronto Star: “We’re all God’s creatures, if a dog goes into a church, he’s entitled to every service that’s offered, including spiritual nourishment.”

What do you think about the priest’s actions in this situation? Were they harmless or blasphemous?

I agree with one of the congregant’s…we are all God’s creatures. In fact, I believe we can learn a lot from our canine companions. Dog’s are honest, trustworthy, loyal…and they will forgive you anything! And yet they ask for so little in return. How many people can we truly say that about? I think it’s great that this priest included Trapper in the services and I think God probably had a good little chuckle over all the ‘hoo-ha’ it created! Lighten up people!!
