Dog News: Minnesota Suburb Ends Free Poopbag Program

May 12th, 2010 by Dan

Dog owners in Edina, Minnesota will have to start stockpiling grocery bags after a ring of thefts of city provided poop bags has caused the program to be discontinued. According to John Keprios, the Director of Parks and Recreation, workers would fill the dispensers (located throughout 8 parks) in the morning and sometimes they would be empty by noon. Now my question is – is this really a case of thievery, or is it greedy (and stingy) dog owners that are coming by and grabbing up many poop bags at a time so they can have them for use outside of the parks? What do you readers think? According to Keprios, it costs the city $12,000 to keep the dispensers filled each year. While I completely agree that dog owners should be responsible for bringing their own bags with them when they are out in public, there comes a time when everyone forgets or needs that “emergency” bag. I’m not sure what the solution is for Edina, but I’m guessing there will be more of a poop problem in the parks.
