Ticket To Ride? Dogs Can In Vienna!

December 15th, 2009 by Dan

In many cities it’s hard to find a cab willing to pick up a canine rider, but in Austria’s capital city of Vienna, public transportation is dog friendly!

If you’re the owner of a toy or small breed that doesn’t mind riding in a bag or carrier, they get a free trip on buses, trams and the cities 5 subway lines. Larger breeds need to buy a “dog” ticket (which is the same as a child’s fare) and must be leashed and muzzled (*all* breeds not in carriers must wear muzzles). Owners of dogs that choose to “go green” and purchase an annual pass get free rides for their dogs as well!

Do you think more dog owners would use public transportation if the systems were as friendly as the one in Vienna?

  1. Todd Edelman, Dogs on Board project Says:

Germany, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, other parts of Austria, Hungary, Slovenia and so on have similar rules… it is a bit to somewhat not as good in France (larger dogs not allowed on local transport) and better in Belgium, the Netherlands and the UK (often dogs of any size go free and without a muzzle).

Pet dogs of all sizes are allowed on local transport in Boston, Calgary, San Francisco, Seattle and Toronto plus Metro North railway out of NYC which serves NJ and CT. Rules vary, but many ban dogs during commute hours.

I have started a project called “Dogs on Board!”. If you want to bring this capability to the bus, etc. which you (would like) to use, please contact me via my linked website.
