Dog Facts: Descendents Of Spacedogs Roamed The White House

As the Cold War raged, Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev sent a gift to young Caroline Kennedy in the form of a small mixed breed dog named Pushinka. Pushinka was a pup of Strelka, who was one of 2 of the first dogs sent into space that returned to earth alive (her predecessor, Laika, did not survive her journey). Since relations were strained, the dog had to be checked for covert spying devices.

Pushnika and Charlie (President Kennedy’s Welsh Terrier) went on to have 4 puppies: White Tips, Streaker, Butterfly, and Blackie. The President nicknamed the pups “pupniks”. Descendants of the dogs are still living today!
