Ask The Dog Guide: When Can I Bathe My Puppy?

March 12th, 2009 by Dan

Question:
At what age is it OK for me to bathe my Pug puppy?

Answer:

Congratulations on your puppy! While it’s very important to get your dog used to grooming routines starting at an early age, you should wait until your puppy is 10 to 12 weeks for his first bath.

Puppies get chilly quickly, you should have a warm towel waiting and dry him off completely. A younger puppy has had a lot of changes in his short life – being taken from his mother and litter mates, adjusting to a new home – which is why it is best to hold off until 2.5 or 3 months for his first dip.

If your puppy is a bit stinky (which does happen), there are grooming wipes that can be used to “spot” clean his coat and paws.
