Ask The Dog Guide: How Much Do Dogs Sleep?

March 9th, 2009 by Dan

I was wondering how much time dogs normally spend sleeping?

While most people think that cats are the nappers when it comes to our household pets, in actuality, dogs sleep a lot!

Adult dogs sleep between 12-18 hours a day on average. This number can be adjusted due to age (senior dogs and puppies tend to be sleepier) or circumstance (a dog in a shelter may be agitated and sleep a great deal less). Some dogs also sleep when there isn’t anything else to do – it’s likely that is what they’re doing for much of the day while we’re at work!

We are the new family of a 10 week old Yorkie who is full of energy. We are crate training since we are gone to school and work most of the day. I leave toys for him, but I wonder about boredom. How many hours is he probably sleeping while we are gone? When can we expect him to sleep through the night? Thanks!
