Ask The Dog Guide: When To Start A Puppy On Raw

December 1st, 2008 by Dan

Question:
When can I start my puppy on the raw diet?? he is 7 1/2 wks old. His owner has been feeding him puppy chow.

Answer:
First off, I’m thrilled that you’re interested in feeding your new pup a raw diet! You can start your dog on RMBs (Raw Meaty Bones) now. There are a few things to remember when feeding a puppy a raw diet:

*
Puppies should be fed up to 10% of their body weight divided into 3-4 meals. However, raw fed pups should not be chubby, they should be lean and muscular.

* Do not feed dense, weight bearing bones. Some examples of RMBs that good for feeding pups are: chicken backs and quarters, ox tails, lamb ribs, and turkey necks. (Lucian also enjoyed quail when he was a puppy!).

* Alternate meats – get the pup used to beef and then a week later switch to chicken, then to turkey. This ensures that your puppy will have a healthy variety of meats and the nutrition they provide over time.
