Dog Fact: “The Island Of Dogs”

While the Canary Islands may sound like they were named after a small yellow song bird, in reality the etymology behind the name is from the Latin – Canariae Inaulae – meaning “Island Of Dogs”. These islands have a history of large populations of giant breed dogs (such as the Presa Canario) that were sure to make quite an impact on the Romans that landed on their beaches!

    Apparently is was named island of dogs by Juba when he sent an expedition to the islands to learn about the inhabitants.
