“Beverly Hills Chihuahua” Opens Tomorrow – All Spotlights on the Chi!

October 2nd, 2008 by Dan

The new Disney film “Beverly Hills Chihuahua” opens tomorrow and is preparing to be a big hit with the younger set across the country. Featuring a canine actor who plays the role of “Chloe” (given a voice by Drew Barrymore) who is the companion of an obsessive owner (Jamie Lee Curtis). The small pooch is lost by her less than responsible niece (played by Piper Perabo) and finds herself in a great deal of hot water. She ends up being aided by a valiant German Shepherd (voiced by Andy Garcia). George Lopez voices “Papi”, Chloe’s dauntless love interest. The film is getting mixed reviews, but is sure to have huge appeal to the crowd who is looking for their “cute” fix – mostly kids.

Here’s an official movie trailer:

But what does being in the spotlight mean for Chihuahuas?

Movies staring canines cause an influx of impulsive puppy purchases ( see “101 Dalmatians” and “My Dog Skip” as perfect examples). Chihuahua rescue groups are now on alert as they fully expect a tidal wave of family purchases of these little dogs. These same groups are already dealing with the backlash created by the talking Taco Bell Chihuahua, Legally Blonde, and of course Paris Hilton who sports her dogs as fashion accessories.

Much like the Dalmatian, Chihuahuas are not family dogs. They are often anti-social with other dogs, snappy with children and difficult to housebreak. They are generally not a good choice for homes with kids – their personalities and small stature makes for a less than kid friendly dog. As puppies, Chihuahuas have an open fontanel and can be easily injured (or even killed) by an unruly child who is only wanting to play. The breed is long lived (12-20 years!) and while they are small and don’t consume much, they are prone to dental issues and luxating patella. Veterinary care for these tiny dogs can add up!

Excellent article. I hope many people read this and correctly research this breed and not purchase because of a fad or as an accessory.
