Ask The Dog Guide: Sports Drinks For Dogs

September 28th, 2008 by Dan

Question:
I’ve seen those “Sports Drinks” for dogs on the market and was wondering what you thought about them?

Answer:
Like human athletes who engage in any vigorous activity, canines who participate in dog sports can easily become dehydrated. However the “sports drinks” that are being marketed often contain preservatives, artificial colors and many ingredients that dogs do not need (and are not healthy for them!).

Water is the best option to re-hydrate, however if your pooch has participated in a heavy amount of activity you can make your own “sports drink”by adding 1 Tablespoon of sugar and 1 Teaspoon of table salt to a Quart of water. Encouraging your dog to drink by adding flavored ice cubes (made with chicken broth ice cubes for example) will often do the trick.
