Ask The Dog Guide: Soft Coated Wheaton Terrier Questions

September 11th, 2008 by Dan

Question:
Can you tell me how much shedding a Wheaton Terrier does and how hard they are to potty train

Answer:
While Wheaton Terriers don’t shed in the way many dogs do (they drop a few dead hairs a day which will end up on your brush if you keep up with proper hygiene practices and on your floor if you don’t), their coats constantly grow and do require quite a bit of intensive grooming to keep the coat mat free. Mats can be uncomfortable for your dog, so it is a must to get into a routine of brushing if you want to keep your Wheatons coat long. Daily grooming is also a great way to bond with your new puppy. However, some owners decide to have their dogs clipped in order to reduce the amount of maintenance their dog’s coat needs.

As for housebreaking, Wheatons are a very smart breed who will catch on quickly, but require consistent training. They can be strong-willed and stubborn as they are true terriers! All puppies thrive on routine and I always recommend crate training during this period of life!
