What Long Weekends Are For When You Own Dogs

August 29th, 2008 by Dan

Before I became a dog owner, long weekends were spent sleeping later and not doing much at all. I might go out with friends or take in a movie on the extra day off. It’s actually difficult to remember life before dogs, as so much of my life IS dogs.

I wouldn’t have it any other way.

So this long weekend I look forward to many of the activities I reserve for lazy, long holiday weekends with my pups. We’ll be going to brunch at one of our favorite dog friendly restaurants – the head chef comes out of the kitchen with a handful of bacon for Lucian each time we show up. Needless to say, he loves the place. We bring some of his favorite toys to keep him occupied while we eat and he’s always worn out from all the stimulation by the time we get home.

Yesterday we went picking at a local orchard and I’m going to be making homemade tomato sauce to eat and freeze for the winter months – Lucian loves laying in the kitchen while I cook (another one of my hobbies). He usually is in the way, but I think he considers it helping.

Next will be bath time! I don’t know about yours, but my dogs love rolling in the dry summer dirt and getting their coats all dusty. In the middle of the week I never have time to bathe them. After their bath they’ll be “furminated” – one of the most satisfying grooming processes I have found! Post bath, Reef likes to curl up in a clean bed, so we’ll try and get all of them laundered before this process!

Lastly, we’ll be taking some nice walks around the neighborhood, as the weather is getting much more pleasant for walking. The humidity is almost gone, which the dogs seem to appreciate.

What are you going to do this long weekend with your dogs? If you need a list of suggestions here are some great ways to hang out with your dog this Labor Day weekend!
