“Queen Of Mean” turns out to be a friend to dogs!

July 2nd, 2008 by Dan

The late hotel giant and real estate “queen” Leona Helmsley left $12 million dollars to her dog, Trouble, in her will (though a NY court brought the pup’s sum down to a mere $2 million). It turns out that is just a drop in the bucket! A recently publicized document says that the entirety of Helmsley’s trust (somewhere between $5 billion - $8 billion dollars) is to be used for the care and welfare of dogs. This seems like very, very good news for needy dogs! However, there are no specific instructions in the document, so it will be up to Helmsley’s trustees to distribute the money.

Even if the trust turns out to be on the “low” end (meaning $5 billion) that sum will be worth almost 10 times the assets of the 7,381 animal-related nonprofits that reported to the IRS in 2005.

The “Queen Of Mean” had quite the soft spot for dogs!
