Update on Reef

May 12th, 2008 by Dan

Well, I have good news and no news to announce. When I took Reef in to see her veterinarian, he agreed with me completely about my concerns. We both thought she could be having kidney issues or even be diabetic due to her increased thirst. He pulled some blood for labs and then called me back the next day with the results……nothing! Her kidneys look great- everything looks normal. We even ran a Lyme Disease panel to make sure she wasn’t experiencing an infection – she is Lyme free! So what we are left with is either she is very thirsty all of the sudden (which is a bit odd), or there is something still that we haven’t detected. If she hasn’t normalized in 2 weeks – back to the vet we go.

Reef Close Up

It is a huge relief to know it isn’t her Kidneys – but it is still somewhat of a mystery. Usually increase in thirst is linked to dietary changes. I would consider a seasonal change, but it hasn’t even been that warm yet. My only other theory is that she is being bothered by allergies (she is an allergenic dog) and it is triggering her to drink more…

Updates will continue!

Hi Dan- I have a 12 yr old Basset Hound and she went through a phase where I could not keep water in her bowl and she was panting a lot, even when she had been sitting still for hours (if you’ve ever been around a Basset, you know that is what they are best at). Anyway, after trial and error, my vet figured out that she was having some arthritis issues and was in pain. The pain led to the panting, which led to the tremendous intake of water. As soon as we put her on medication, she went back to normal drinking patterns and panting only when she was active. I am not a vet and have no idea if this could be similar to what Reef is experiencing, but I thought I would share just in case it helps you (and Reef) out. Good luck!

I am glad to see that Reef is so far doing okay! I hope she normalizes soon. Maybe she has been watching too many Aquafina commercials?
