Search And Rescue Lab Receives Pacemaker

May 29th, 2008 by Dan

A 5 year old Chocolate Lab named Molly has spent many of her days seeking out injured disaster survivors, victims of violent crimes and serving humankind - it was finally her turn. This past Thursday at the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine, Molly received a pacemaker. The pooch was diagnosed with a complete electrical heart blockage that led Molly to extreme lethargy. Her owners, Allen and Alicia Brown, panicked when her heart rate fell from a normal 80 to 38.

After Molly’s story was spread in the local paper (and through the local search and rescue team, which she is a member of), generous donations started rolling in. Medtronic Inc donated the pacemaker itself and an anonymous businessman pledged $2000 towards the dogs surgical fees.

Molly is trained in both live and cadaver retrieval, skills that can take up to 2 years to train. The lucky pooch is expected to be able to return to work in about 2 months - after some well deserved recovery time!
