The First FDA Diet Pill- For Dogs
It has arrived. A diet pill- for dogs. Slentrol (dirlatapide) is the first FDA approved medication to manage the weight of obese canines. The drug works by keeping some of the fat from being absorbed into the body, giving the dog the feeling of being full. Thus, a dog on this medication will eat less at meals - leading to weight loss. The makers of the drug say the average amount of weight lost is 3% a month. Dogs only loose weight while on the medication - once it is stopped, their normal appetites will resume. So if lifestyle changes aren’t made (instituting a program of exercise as well!) putting a dog through this would essentially be a waste - and a huge stress on his or her system. Yo-yo dieting is a big no-no!
