Ask The Dog Guide: Puppy Feeding Question

April 23rd, 2008 by Dan

Question: How often should I put food and water out for my bloodhound puppy?

Answer: In our experience working with many puppies (on many different diets) – these young ones do best when they are fed 3 meals a day (until about 16 weeks of age). Remember, the higher quality the diet (the less fillers such as corn, wheat , animal digest and other byproducts) the less waste your puppy will produce! Housebreaking will be an easier process if there is less coming out.

Toy breed puppies should have food available to them at all times to prevent Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).

Pups should have access to fresh water at all times during the day. However water should be taken up around 7 or 8 PM ( a few hours before bedtime) and the pup should be taken outside to relieve himself just before everyone goes to sleep.
