Product Review: Kongtime! Automatic Kong Dispenser!

March 28th, 2008 by Dan

The moment I heard about the Kongtime, I knew I had to get one. My dogs love working to get at every last speck of a treat that I stuff into their Kongs, so when I discovered that there was now a contraption that automatically dispenses stuffed kong toys – It sounded perfect! My dogs would want me to leave them alone MORE often!

The Kongtime has compartments for 4 stuffed kongs. You can vary the size of the toys used according to the size of your dog (small, medium or large). While the website says you can place it on the floor or on the counter, I feel like either of my dogs would try to break into the thing if it was at their level! It is made of tough plastic, but I still put it up on the counter where they can’t reach it. Now, I ONLY use this toy when one of the dogs is out by themselves (and the other is out with me). It is not a good idea to use the kongtime in a multi-dog situation. If you have more than one dog it could lead to a squabble over who gets the goodies. However it is the ideal gadget to keep a single dog from getting bored or to aid a pooch with separation anxiety issues.

The kongtime has 2 settings- 4 and 8 hours. It is very simple to set (you just push the button) and then all of the kongs will be randomly dispensed within that period of time. Right before the machine releases a toy it lets out a “beep”! It’s funny, because both dogs now come running whenever they hear that beep!

At first I was concerned because the kongtime runs on AA batteries, however it seems to be pretty power efficient. I use rechargeable and they last about 3 months (I don’t use the device every day, though my dogs wish I did!).

I can’t say enough good things about the kongtime. People will wonder why you have what looks like a mini-flying saucer on your counter, but you’ll have one very happy dog!

That sounds like a pretty nifty little invention! I may just have to try one for Finnigan and Cat (a rottie!).
Then again, you say it should not be used in multi-dog situations, so I may recommend it instead to my mother-in-law who has one dog.
