Kids! Here is a new way to convince your parents to get you that dog - it’s good for you! A study conducted in Israel just revealed that The study revealed that children who reside in homes with dogs have lower blood pressure than those who do not. Researchers. working in conjunction with the Gertner Institute for Epidemiology, the children’s ward at the Sheba Medical Center, Tel Hashomer, and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem observed 228 children from 1st to 3rd grades. The study consisted of a questioner that parents answered asking if there was a dog in the home, as well as details about the child’s relationship with that dog (if there was one). The children then underwent blood pressure examinations - first, in a relaxed setting and then under a slight amount of stress (they were asked to read aloud). After the numbers were compared, the children who lived in homes with a dog were found, as a group to have lower blood pressure than those who did not.

Dr Michel Balaish, the epidemiologist of the Agriculture Ministry’s veterinary services believes this study is important for the following reason, “The professional literature states that one third of the children who suffer from high blood pressure will suffer from this problem when they are adults,” he said. “This is a characteristic of importance for one’s health and one which has implications also for the children’s well being in the future.”
