Ask The Dog Guide: New Puppy Anxiety

March 4th, 2008 by Dan

Question: A friend of mine just got a new puppy and is wondering what he can do to help calm the puppy’s anxiety when he leaves her alone. Is there something he can put in her kennel with her to help keep her distracted while he’s gone or is this just a phase the pup needs to go through?

Answer: Your friend is off to a fantastic start by crate training his new puppy! Crates are the absolute safest places in the home for a pup during that phase where everything they possibly can chew- will be chewed! Check out our piece on Crate Training With Love to read more about effective and gentle ways to get your puppy used to her new crate.

There are quite a few ways to make the crate a more welcoming place for your puppy. We highly recommend stuffed Kong toys as a great way to keep a puppy or dog occupied while they are in the crate. You can find some recipe ideas here. Also suggest leaving some soothing music or even the sound of a television set on for the pup, sometimes the background noise helps to soothe them. Many dogs grow to love their crates! Try to encourage your friend to make this type of training the most positive experience he can for his puppy. It will be well worth it in the long run! Good Luck!
