Will Others Follow Their Lead?

February 9th, 2008 by Dee

As I flipped through channels last night trying to find something for background noise, a commercial caught my eye. A really cute dog hanging its head out of the car window as his family is driving. I just paused for a moment and shook my head, thinking about what could happen if a bug or some other debris would happen to fly into the dog’s eyes, ears, or mouth.

Right before I change the channel, the words ‘Pet Injury coverage’ spark my interest. Huh? According to Progressive, they now include pets in with their Collision coverage.

Pets are something that normally are not considered when a person shops for auto insurance. What I was able to find out is, under most insurance policies, the other driver’s policy will cover your dog’s injuries with their property damage liability coverage only if the accident was not your fault. With Progressive, their Pet Injury coverage will cover your pet regardless of who is at fault and covers up to $500 in vet expenses.

My first thoughts were “What a great idea! Why hasn’t anyone thought of this before?” This is a HUGE untapped market Progressive has ventured into. With the ever growing number of pet owners, Progressive is defiantly being ‘Progressive’. But only $500?! Progressive is definitely taking a step in the right direction but with the costs of Veterinary care, bills can reach thousands of dollars for very quickly. The coverage is just a drop in the bucket.

While every bit helps I would like to see an option to increase this insurance to cover the actual costs of vet bills due to an accident. After the initial trial period, I would also like to see Progressive be more creative with this coverage and also see other insurance companies take an interest in adding pet coverage to their own policies.

I was reading the paper not long ago and saw an article about this pet injury coverage by Progressive. I think it is a great idea, and I think other insurance companies will jump on board soon. After all, pets are members of the family!!
