Ask The Dog Guide: Shedding Rat Terrier

February 1st, 2008 by Dan

Question: I have a rat terrier and he sheds all the time. I was told that they don’t shed that much, but he does shed all the time and makes my house looks bad. Please let me know if I can do anything about the excess shedding. Thanks.

Answer: While Rat Terriers may have short hair, it is hair and they do shed like any other dog. You can help with excess shedding by grooming your dog on a regular basis with a rubber curry brush (available at almost any pet supply store) to aid in removing the dead hair. Diet can also play a role in excessive shedding. Often owners see a huge difference when they supplement a high quality diet with fish oil (such as herring or fish oil). These products can also be purchased in pet supply stores or online and your dog will probably gobble it up along with his regular meal. The Omega-3 fatty acids that these oils hold often improve the health of the skin and coat.
