Ask The Dog Guide: Child Friendly Molossers
Question: I was wondering if there are particular Molossers that are better with children?
Answer: Thanks for writing! You’ve given us an excuse to talk about some of our favorite dogs! While many of the breeds that fall into the Molosser category are *quite* large, some of them are more suited for homes with children than others and much of this has little to do with their size, but their personality traits. Any giant breed is going to have to be carefully monitored around children, as they often are unaware of what their physical movements and strength could do to a person smaller than themselves. I don’t recommend bringing them into a home with a toddler as the little one is too easily knocked over when the dog bowls past them in a puppy frenzy. However, the following breeds are some of the more mild-mannered molossers and may be good kid-friendly choices - they are all known to be quite gentle, stoic, even-tempered and protective of children.

When dealing with dogs of this size, early training is not an option! You must begin basic obedience with your dog as soon as you bring it into your home - especially when there are children involved. Please remember that all dogs need a “kid free” zone as well! Children need to learn to respect a dogs space and he or she should be able to get away from playtime if desired. A well behaved giant breed gallivanting with kids is an amazing sight! Good luck in your search!
