Ask The Dog Guide: German Shepherd Shedding

January 18th, 2008 by Dan

Question: I am interested in getting a German shepherd. Can you tell me how much they shed? I know all dogs shed to some degree, but are we talking a little hair or handfuls of hair every time you pet the dog? Thanks.

Answer: If fur is something you are worried about, a German Shepherd may not be the dog for you. GSD’s have a double coat. This means the topcoat consists of rougher, courser fur while the undercoat is a softer texture. Double coated breeds shed more than those with a single coat (including a full “blowing the coat” where the undercoat is shed during the season change). Shepherd owners become accustom to frequent vacuuming and lint rolling!
