Breaking News! Justice in the Michael Vick Dog Fighting Case!

December 13th, 2007 by Dan

I received the news of Michael Vick’s conviction this afternoon via a text message on my cell phone as I was out working with clients training their new puppy.  I am tempted to write a letter to Judge Henry Hudson, who made the decision to hand down a sentence of 23 months in a federal prison as opposed to the 12-18 months that federal guidelines recommended in this case.  Hudson said, “You were instrumental in organizing and promoting this activity”, “I’m convinced it wasn’t a momentary lapse. You were at least a full partner. I’m not sure you’ve taken full responsibility for your role in this activity.”  When Vick apologized to his family, Hudson commented,”You need to apologize also to the millions of young people who look up to you”.   Michael Vick was also sentenced to 3 years of probation after his sentence.

Vick also must pay a total of $928,000  for the care of the dogs seized from his properties.  Initially 53 dogs were taken during the investigation, but 6 of these dogs died or had to be euthanized.  The remaining dogs will be placed with various rescue groups:  Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Utah (22); Bay Area Dog Lovers Responsible About Pit Bulls (BAD RAP) of Oakland, California (10); Richmond Animal League of Richmond, Virginia (4); Georgia SPCA of Suwanee, Georgia (3); SPCA of Monterey County, California (3); Recycled Love Inc. of Baltimore, Maryland (3); Animal Rescue of Tidewater, Chesapeake, Virginia (1); and PACK (Pit Bull Advocates for Compassion and Kindness), San Francisco, California (1).

The funds that Vick is required to pay out for the dogs care will be sent along with each animal to the shelter it is being placed in to aid in its rehabilitation process.  Dogs that are in good mental and physical health will come with $5000.  Dogs who need extensive rehabilitation and care will arrive with $20,000 to aid the shelter in covering any expenses they might accrue.  Hopefully each of these dogs will find the perfect, understanding home and their traumatic past will be behind them.

True, the ruleing was not fair, but it realy could not have gone any other way. The judges job is not to make new laws but to enterpret them and make sure they are followed. I mmean what if one day they band junk food, saing that it is bad for you. That seemes good people would be healthier and live longer. Yet we have the Bill of right which protect us even though it allowes pervers people to abuse poor, helpless animals.
