Ask The Dog Guide: What Breed For Me?
Question: I’m looking for a dog but not sure what breed. I have a small yard and would like a medium to large size dog. A dog that doesn’t shed. One that is playful and good with children. Also I would like a dog that will play and relax at times. Do you have any recommendations for me? I was thinking possibly a black lab or boxer. Thank you for your time and help!!!
Answer: Hi! Congratulations on your choice to open your home to a new family member! The first thing I want to say is if you are wanting a no or low shedding dog a lab is not the choice for you! Labs are amazing family dogs and wonderful companions but they will leave reminders of themselves all over your house and clothes! Boxers are shedders as well. I would say a Standard Poodle may be a great choice for you and your family. They are extremely intelligent dogs and are easy to train and are known for being excellent with children. Don’t let their reputation for being “prissy” fool you – these dogs are characters and are very much “real” dogs! They do need a good amount of grooming, so that is one aspect that needs to be kept in mind when you begin to research the breed.
