Ask The Dog Guide: Herding Breed Options

December 6th, 2007 by Dan

Question: We’re looking for a good herding dog as a companion to our 8 mo. lab. She’s great but she needs a buddy. Other than a collie, what’s our choices?

Answer: Your lab is a lucky girl to be getting an active friend! You have many, many choices when looking for a herding breed. Since there are *so* many out there, I will just mention a few of the more common options (and a few of my less-common personal favorites!).

Australian Cattle Dog

Australian Sheperd

Briard

Old English Sheepdog

Cardigan Welsh Corgi

Bouvier des Flandres

I hope these links help and that you find the perfect companion for your family! Herding dogs are incredibly intellegent and active pets and can be a wonderful addition as long as they have a job to do! Good luck!
