Answer: Sudden-Onset Peeing In House
Question: My girl Cannoli has started to pee in random places throughout the house when we are not home(she has a dog door that opens into a big back yard). At first we thought it was related to thunderstorms but she has done it a few times when there is no bad weather. She has no problem going out to pee regardless of weather when we are home. She has even peed right in front of the dog door. She’s almost 7 years old, always used the dog door and we have checked her for bladder infections. Other than locking her outside when we are not home, I am at a loss of what to do. Any suggestions?
Answer: This scenario sounds like it could involve be triggered by a change in your routine- new work schedule, more hours out of the house, etc. Whether or not that is true, crate training is the most effective and positive way to prevent accidents like these from continuing. In addition, if you are spending long hours away from home, consider bringing in a walker during the day to take her out for a good, stimulating walk. Dogs don’t actually get much mental stimulation or exercise in their own backyards, so her acting out in this way might be a result of boredom and frustration.
Please do not lock her outside. We highly recommend crate training, especially in cases where a dog is acting out while home alone. Crating may only be needed as a temporary measure, but either way it proves invaluable. For details on this process, see our article here.

Hi Claire, Hi Dan. I’m so glad that you are here writing what you are writing. The pet food industry still makes me so upset. But it is our own fault. Keep putting good information out there, it is invaluable, and so…so rare.
Under the paw, do you really suppose that the miracles you personally have witnessed in your raw animals has been denied to humanity? We are not so different then our beloved companions…perhaps only so inside of our fears.
