Dropping Like Flies: Recalls Left and Right
Turns out that wheat gluten contaminated with melamine is in all kinds of different places. A third private manufacturer of pet food/treats, Sunshine Mills, Inc., has issued a voluntary recall. So, while nothing has yet been found in these biscuits (melamine, rat poison, or otherwise), they do contain wheat gluten from the same batch in question.
Also, on the Salmonella contamination front: another FDA alert. To be clear, this strain of the contamination has nothing to do with imported products used in the pet food industry; this last one is made with ‘all American beef pizzle.’ I wondered what beef pizzle meant, and looked it up. I’ll let you do the same.
So buying domestically produced products is not the solution: look for smaller companies, who have more invested in the quality of their products; treats without meat OR wheat gluten; and only very high quality meat products. Natural Balance Food Rolls are always a big hit (at least as far as treats go, we’ve never used them for food).
