Answer: Who Wins ‘Best in Show’
Question: Why do some breeds have a much higher frequency of winning “best in show” than other breeds?
Answer: Part of this is simply statistics- there are greater percentages of some breeds in any given show, so it is more likely that one from that group will win. Terriers are popular ‘best in show’ picks. Some people think this phenomenon has to do with the “showy” quality of certain breeds (like terriers) that make them more appealing to judges.
Similarly, judges may be less familiar with some breeds, and will not know what to look for in those dogs. And, breed standards (the ‘ideal’ physical qualities of that breed) may be more or less specific- there is, of course, more flexibility in judging when standards are looser.
