A Puppy Birthday Party

November 19th, 2006 by stephanie

A year ago I would have never imagined that I would be interested in having a birthday party for my dog. Yet, in the 8 months that we have had our Goldendoodle, she has become such an important part of our lives. So we wanted to make her first birthday special.

Here’s how we celebrated. We scheduled her to attend her doggie day care during the afternoon, since it is her favorite activity, as she loves playing with the other dogs there. We also arranged for her to get her first professional grooming, and she came home looking more grown up and sophisticated, with a cute bow for her party. We ate dinner together, careful to plan a menu that she could eat, which was hot dogs and apples with peanut butter. Then she opened her presents. The concept of opening gifts was a little foreign to her, but she began to get the point when bones were wrapped inside. Lastly, we brought a cake out and sang to her.

The cake was the most tricky part of the party planning, because I wanted a cake that she could eat and that would also be appealing to us. I found several options online, though the majority were meat flavored cake. Ultimately I decided on a regular carrot cake, since all the ingredients are safe for most dogs to eat, and I only iced part of it, because I was unsure whether cream cheese icing was good for dogs.

Our dog clearly enjoyed her first birthday and felt special. I thought of inviting some of her puppy friends and neighbors to attend, but decided that I did not want several other dogs crashing through my house. Maybe for a summer birthday, it would be fun to host an outdoor dog party, inviting neighbors and their pets.
