Getting Your Dog To Stay Off Furniture

May 10th, 2006 by Micah

I’ve found that the easiest and most effective way to get your dog or puppy to stay off the furniture is to buy a large, soft doggy bed from PetSmart or some similar store.  There are really two reasons that your puppy started getting on the furniture in the first place: 1) because it’s more comfortable than the floor and 2) to be with you.  The soft doggy bed takes care of the first reason.  But if your dog is already habituated to sitting on the couch, she may not immediately take to the new soft bed (although many times she will).  If your dog still wants to get up on the couch, the key is to train her to use the new bed.   You do this training by sitting in a chair very close to the new bed, so the dog gets comforable and still feels close to you.  Stay off your own couch for a few days and just get the dog used to sitting in its new place.  You can enhance the training by placing the Kong toy on her bed or even giving her some treats when she lays down on it.

Just remember, your dog wants two things: to be near you and to be comfortable.  A dog bed can provide both and even has the advantage of not requiring your dog to jump.
