Ask The Dog Guide: Dog Triggering Asthma?
Question:
My mom has had asthma from birth. We bought a Pekingese and after two months my mom began having asthma attacks. Is it because of the dog?
Answer:
Asthma is caused by both environmental and genetic factors. While I am not a doctor, and I don’t know your mother’s medical history, asthma attacks can be triggered by pet dander. The Pekingese has a very thick coat that easily collects dirt and dander. It takes daily brushing and care in order to keep it clean and well groomed. This breed sheds normally. All of these traits would make it a poor choice for someone suffering from asthma. You may want to have your dog clipped into a puppy cut and get into a daily grooming routine - these steps could improve the allergy situation in your household.
